IT costs -v- Benefits

By SLAS Spokesperson

The ongoing debate as to whether Information Technology provides a net benefit or a net cost was further fuelled by the report from the court in which the judge carefully noted a plea in mitigation on his laptop computer but, unfortunately, struck the wrong key at one stage and wiped the whole note from his computer and had to ask the pleading lawyer to start again.  Given the enormous value that is placed upon judicial time, the cost of this exercise may have been considerable and indicates again that the potential costs as well as the potential benefits of the use of electronic information technoclogy may have to be calculated before any major commitment is made toward the development of its use in the courts.
